FEʻE Kauwela (SUMMER) internship

Join this hands-on 12-week Summer internship in organic vegetable farm management and food production designed to accelerate participants’ capacity to lead organic fruit and vegetable operations through Climate-Smart Agriculture (C-SA) and cultural revitalization and community building.

SUMMARY

  • Internship Length

    • Interns will commit to full participation in an full-time (40hr/wk) 12-week intensive program that will include an initial week-long orientation at MA‘O Organic Farms, farm site visits and workshops on climate-smart farming practices.

  • Weekly Schedule

    • Each week participants will be working to support farm operations on one of the partnering farms.

    • Timing of work hours will depend on the specific site that each intern works at, and hours can range between ~18 and 40 hrs/week depending on availability and need.

  • Internship Responsibilities

    • Work in partnership to manage organic farming operations including field preparation, fertilization, planting, crop fertility and care.

    • Assist sales, harvests, and distribution of product and help to drive the economic performance of the business.

    • Nurture existing business relationships, networks and alliances to grow the capacity of the partnering farms.

    • Model mutual love, respect and a willingness to work.

  • Internship Eligibility

    • Pursuing education opportunities (e.g., undergraduate or recent college graduate).

    • Ability to work independently.

    • Knowledge and/or interest in sustainable agriculture, particularly for mitigating the impacts of climate change.

    • Knowledge of and/or interest in Hawaiian cultural traditions with a commitment to the Hawaiʻ i's rural communities and the greater Oʻ ahu region.

    • Driver's license, comfortable driving heavy trucks and equipment, able to work for long periods in a hot environment and lift up-to 50 pounds.

  • Compensation

    • Stipend $2400/month An educational stipend is provided upon successful completion of all internship activities for the pay period.
